Producing videos can be fun, challenging - in a good way - and satisfying to your creative side. The task of producing a video can vary from making a few cuts all the way to adding audio, graphics and effects, transitions and a host of other editing features. You can produce your video in many different video formats and distribute in one or multiple forms. The choices and options are many.

This article is for the inexperienced film maker. Below you will find basic, generic steps for producing a video. Detailed instruction for editing, producing and distributing will be reserved for another day. The intention here is to provide enough information to break the ice. By following and applying these steps you will be able to create, edit and produce your very first video. Once the ice is broken, it’s only a matter of gaining experience with your video editor software. As you master the art of video editing and production, your pleasure and quality of video development will increase.

Step One - Record Something

The first thing you do to produce a video is to make a video recording. You probably have done this in some fashion with either your digital camera or camcorder. Another way to record something is by using a screen capture application to record a dynamic presentation of some sort as it is being displayed on a PC screen. Another simple recording media is an assortment of still pictures. Whatever your recorded material is, locate it and let’s get started.

Step Two – Import/Capture the Recorded Media

Open your video editing application and import the recorded media into the program. This will be a digital file that you have previously loaded to a folder on your computer. An alternative method is to use the capture feature of your video editor application to acquire and import the recorded media directly from the recording device I.E camera, camcorder, etc. Follow the instruction of your video editing software for this feature.

Step Three - Make Edits to the Recording

Now you're ready to apply whatever editing features you desire to the recorded media. This is where you can cut unwanted sections, apply sound effects, split the recording & insert additional graphics, and add zooms & transitions between various frames of the video. For the purpose of this article just cut a small section of the video, you can experiment with other editing features later. Save the editing session as a temporary file.

Step Four – Produce the Video

Production of the video involves a process called rendering. This is where the edited media will be built by your computer with options selected prior to the production or export phase. One of the most important options for rendering video is the format the video will be created and exported as. For now select either WMV for windows or MOV for MAC. Find the production buttons within the editor program and produce the video. Follow the instruction of your video editing software for this feature.

This instruction for sure leaves out much of the detail needed for producing high quality, entertaining videos. The point is to just get you started. This high level outline provides the concept and method behind all video production. It becomes the editor’s responsibility to use help files and additional training material to learn how to master the art of video editing and production.
